What's that big star over there?
Richard Fleet seems to be a rather clever chap. He's made a lovely bit of freeware that shows you where all the planets are in the night sky on any given night. Just load it up, click on "now", then click on "horizon view" and you'll be able to tell exactly which planet or star is visible in your area at that moment. It even works during the day, but that's not really the best time to be out with your binoculars, is it?
It really is jolly clever, and it's free. You can download the Graphdark program by clicking the link below.

Now that IS neat! I shall be able to settle the discussion at work about "that big star..you know..the Christmas one, its Pluto isnt it? Yes, its not a star...etc etc" But without your instructions I wouldn't have sussed how to use the program. ( I haven't worked out what the blue and green bits are yet tho? My horizon doesn't look like that?) Back to a different sort of star - just sorting out the Christmas tree. Thanks!

The green and blue bits represent a suggested horizon. You can alter it and save it to represent the way the horizon looks where you are.
